Epsiprantel
What is epsiprantel?
Epsiprantel (Cestex®) is an oral deworming medication used to treat and kill tapeworms in dogs and cats.
How do I give my pet epsiprantel?
- Epsiprantel comes as tablets that are given orally (by mouth).
- Epsiprantel should be given with food.
- If you have difficulty getting your animal to take the medicine, contact your veterinarian or pharmacist for tips to help with dosing and reduce the stress of medication time for you and your animal.
- To maximize the benefit of deworming, it is best to treat all animals in the environment.
- If Dipylidium caninum tapeworms are suspected, an appropriate flea-control program should also be started.
- Some intestinal parasites can infect humans. Take strict hygienic precautions when handling infected pets and their feces. Consult your veterinarian or family doctor to discuss how to prevent human infection and re-infection of your pet.
This medication should take effect within 1–2 days; however, effects may not be noted outwardly, and laboratory tests will be needed to evaluate this medication’s effectiveness.
What if I miss giving my pet the medication?
Epsiprantel is usually given once. Animals that are re-infected with tapeworms will need to be retreated. Do not give the pet two doses at once.
Are there any potential side effects from epsiprantel?
Epsiprantel may cause the following side effects:
- vomiting (rare)

Other side effects may occur. If you notice anything unusual, contact your veterinarian immediately. This moderate-acting medication should stop working within a few days, although effects may be longer in pets with liver or kidney disease.
Are there any risk factors for this medication?

Is any monitoring needed with this medication?
- Stool examinations (fecals) are recommended at regular intervals to monitor this drug’s effectiveness and your pet’s re-exposure to parasites.
- Your veterinarian will let you know when they want to reassess your pet to ensure the medication is working and not causing side effects.
- At home, monitor for any side effects such as those noted above. If any side effects occur, discontinue use of the medication and contact your veterinarian.
How do I store epsiprantel?
- Tablets should be stored in a tightly sealed container at 20°C–25°C (68°F–77°F). Tablets may be exposed to higher and lower temperatures of 15°–30°C (59°–86°F) during short excursions.
